Here’s a useful chart of the shutter speed to use for various situations and effects.

Here’s the last photo in my recent Utica Ice Cream Parade post.


You can see that I panned the motorcyclist, i.e., the motorcycle and its rider are crisp and the background is blurred by my panning motion. I shot this photo at 1/125 second. A slightly slower shutter speed probably would have created even more blur of the background and, therefore, more of a motion effect.

Maybe we should make shutter speeds the topic for one of our meetings or outings so that members can try out panning and other shutter speed effects, such as water blurring.
